My name is Matt Smallacombe and I am a Personal Trainer & Nutrition Coach based in Tavistock. Whatever your health & fitness goals may be I can help you to achieve them with my friendly and dedicated Personal Training service.
My philosophy is that we should all strive to be the best versions of ourselves possible!
My training is about achieving your goals and also making your training transfer over to all areas of your life, including your mood and energy, playing with your children and even being more useful at the household and garden chores! This is important because a lot of gym/trainers will make you use primarily machines which only get you working in one plane of motion which means that your smaller muscles, bones and tendons do not get the work that they need to grow stronger. I will take you through exercises that will work your body from all angles which will not only make you stronger and healthier but will also make you fitter for everyday life. I'm not the sort of trainer who will put you on a treadmill for an hour and leave you, I want you to enjoy and get the most out of your training!
Now here's a bit about me...
I grew up in Tavistock were I played sport from a young age, mainly football to which I played to a County level. In school I also got involved in basketball, rugby and cricket to name just a few. I have always been drawn towards being fit and strong and made it a tradition to always watch the World’s Strongest Man at Christmas which fascinated me and led me to buying the small concrete filled weight sets to start training in my garage during my mid teens.
Through my love of health & fitness and wanting to help others achieve their goals I completed my Personal Training course in the Spring of 2011. Since then through Personal Training and working at my local Sports Centre gym in Tavistock I have worked with numerous people from different backgrounds and with different goals including strength and muscle building, sports performance training, weight loss and for improvements in general health. I had a stint in the British Army from 2014-2015 which taught me a lot about physical and mental toughness and also constantly striving to improve myself. After my journey in the Army was done due to medical reasons I returned to my Personal Training roots and moved back to Tavistock. I am a self-confessed nerd when it comes to learning about training and nutrition and am always making sure that I keep on top of any new information and I am always striving to learn more.
In 2013 football had run its course in my life and I needed a new challenge. As weight training and strength had
always been my main fascination, this seemed like the natural progression for me. I entered a Powerlifting competition with 8 weeks’ notice and managed to win the South West Division in my weight class and from that point I was hooked! I qualified for the British Nationals in 2014 and managed to finish 4th. To date my best competition lifts are a 185kg Squat (previous BDFPA South-West Full Power Squat Record holder) & 176kg Squat (previous BDFPA South-West Single Lift Squat Record holder), 120kg Bench Press, 190kg Deadlift and a 495kg Total at body weights ranging from 71.6kg - 74kg.
I have since graduated from the highly-acclaimed Body Type Nutrition Academy which entitles me to practice as a Nutrition Coach. This has given me the knowledge to work with people with all different sorts of nutritional goals, this can be just learning the basics of what to eat for optimal health, sports performance, aesthetic goals or if you suffer from a condition such as IBS I can help you with how to manage the symptoms so that you can go back to enjoying your life and not having the constant worry about when the next episode may take place.
I have also qualified as a Strength & Conditioning Coach which enables me to work with competitive athletes and sports teams.
That’s a bit about me, now I want to know more about you…what are your health & fitness goals? They may be strength and muscle based, you may want to perform better at your sport, lose weight or to feel more energetic and live a healthier life…either way I can help you to ACHIEVE MORE!
